Row F: Sheaffer Thin Model (TM) Snorkel: This is the pen that gave the Parker 51 a run for its money. For people who are just getting interested in vintage pens, it is an especially good pen to consider. Like so many other classic vintage fountain pens, Sheaffer’s Snorkel captured the best of what American pens had to offer during the fifties and sixties: quality, craftsmanship, classic looks, reliability, durability, and smooth performance. Though one often hears about how complicated the filling mechanism is, in truth, it’s not that complicated and it certainly isn’t complicated to fill and write with. The pen comes either with traditional open nibs or with Sheaffer’s famous conical Triumph nib. Nibs are either 14K gold or palladium-silver alloy. Do not dismiss the palladium-silver alloy nibs. They are expensive, high quality nibs made from an alloy of palladium and silver, and they are a far cry from more common stainless steel nibs. Pens were given new model names as they traveled up the Snorkel ladder progressing from alloy nibs to gold nibs, and progressing from caps and barrels made of plastic to caps and barrels made from more expensive materials including gold-fill and gold. White dot guarantees available for upscale pens also added cost. Snorkels that follow are in very nice condition: there is no significant wear to pocket clip or trim, including chromed metal barrel threads or pen bodies. No fissures or fractures where the pocket clip is attached to a plastic cap. No chewed up end caps. No names or initials on caps or barrels. There may be light surface scratches on metal caps suggesting light use. If there is a ding or a flaw, I will do my best to point it out. If I say very nice throughout, please refer to what I have said above.
